Maria Micaela  Viscountess of Jorbalan 1846

The Congregation of Adorers was founded in 1856 in Madrid, Spain by María Micaela, Vizcondesa de Jorbalan.

Micaela was born in 1809 into the Spanish aristocracy with the fearless temperament of her father and the compassionate heart of her mother. As a noblewoman, Micaela spent much of her time supporting charities and attending social events. During one of Micaela's charity visits to Saint John of God Hospital, she met a young woman who had been deceived and forced into prostitution.

This encounter deeply challenged Micaela and led her to question her comfortable and privileged life. She went through periods of struggle that few understood or accepted, including her family, and eventually she decided to leave her wealth, title, and position to dedicate herself to living and caring her wealth for women.

She went through periods of struggle that few understood or accepted, including her family, and eventually she decided to leave her wealth, title, and position to dedicate herself to living and caring for women. In 1845, her Micaela opened her first house. Discovering a great need in the society of the time and for the women of the street "no one protects a woman from bad living" she would say in the language of the time. She worked tirelessly to integrate women into society and to have a decent life. At the end of her life, she had opened 7 shelters for women victims of prostitution.

In 1856 she founded the Congregation of the Adorer Sisters in response to an urgent need of her time, "to liberate and promote women victims of prostitution." She died the Martyr of Charity, while taking care of the women and her Sisters during a cholera epidemic in Valencia-Spain in 1865.Micaela was a passionate and radical woman who endured many difficulties in her vocation. She drew courage and strength from her deep Christian faith, and more than 165 years later, her pedagogy of love - love, acceptance, understanding, respect, forgiveness, patience and mercy - continues to inspire people around the world to continue the work that she started.
